Olympic games 1968 Mexico

Olympic summer games 1968 in Mexico: black power salute
Tommie Smith and John Carlos, 1st and 3rd in the 200m respectively, showed their solidarity for the Black Panther movement on the medal podium while the anthum played. In addition to the fists and the gloves, they also wore no shoes to protest black poverty, and beads around their necks to protest lynching. Within hours, they were stripped of their medals and sent home.(more)

Left; GREENE, bronze medalist in the 100 m race, demonstrating against US race discrimination by clutching his fist on the podium. 1968. Right; Bob BEAMON, winner of the long jump, receiving the gold medal. He jumped at lenght 8 m 90, improve upon the world best reference by 55 cm
Lee EVANS, winner of the 400 m in 43,86 sec. 1968. All black and white photo's above by  ©Raymond Depardon/Magnum Photos

I couldn't find a recording of just the salute. Though this clip is very interesting, "the salute" doesn't come with the original sound, wich makes it less powerful than it was in reality.
