Latest Fashion in Australia:
Australia we need to talk. For too long our national uniform has consisted of a singlet, shorts and thongs. Undeniably this ensemble is well suited to our summer climate but with so many fabulous home grown designers don’t you think its time for a stylish update this Australia Day? Choosing an outfit designed on Australian soil shows support for the country and pride in the talent it produces in a far more stylish fashion than the guy wearing the flag as a cape next to you.
Right now we have a lot to be proud of. After conquering the international eveningwear market Rachel Gilbert is launching her debut Ready to Wear collection in AW 2011. The collection will feature leather dresses and sequin shifts, translating her feminine and beautifully embellished aesthetic into a collection that is far more attainable. Australian labels continue to gain an international following overseas, especially in the UK, with the irrepressible Sass & Bide currently in plans to open their first London boutique. Of last year’s Fashion Week, Dion Lee’s show was surely the most applauded, Vogue editor Kirstie Clements claimed that he “saved Fashion Week” and his designs have garnered the interest of respected buyers including Net-a-Porter.
Australia Day has a history for being all about the three B’s – beach, BBQ and booze. When it comes to the beach look no further than Hotel Bondi and Zimmerman for all swim essentials. Hotel Bondi has same great on trend high-waisted bikinis and while the entire Zimmermann swimwear collection is amazing, I particularly love their underwire bandeau bikinis this season. A great dress to throw on for the beach is the Ellery ‘Dee A-Line Jersey Dress’ in white. Perfect for summer, this dress is made of organic cotton jersey and has low arm holes meaning its good riddance sweat patches! The ‘Invidia’ short by Maurie & Eve will show off your legs to maximum effect, they’re short but more sassy than sweet. Sass & Bide’s ‘The Wild’ short’s mid blue denim, cuffed detail and high waist makes it perfect for daywear, these shorts were made to pair with a cropped tee.
At an afternoon BBQ you’ll sizzle more than the sausages dressed in the ‘Every Night I Wander Around’ dress by Alice McCall, oversized with a low v-neck purchase this mini dress in pollen, the bright yellow fabric will be a subtle salute to our national colours green and gold. Backless and BBQ ready the Zimmerman ‘Mirror Mirror V Marle Maxi’ is a dress that can take you from the backyard to a bar with just a slight change in accessories.
Getting to the bottom of things, a good Australia Day shoe is like a good bar – open. For shoes that will out-sparkle the champagne try the Miss Fellini gold sandals from Peep Toe Shoes. For adaptable styles both the Betty Summer Sandal from Witchery in cosmetic and Sportsgirl’s Pretty Plait Sandal will work with a variety of Australia Day outfits.
